DEFOE NETS TWICE

Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe proved his worth just at the right time for Tottenham after he scored two goals in a match against Stevenage, which helped the North London club to get into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

Stevenage managed to hold out Tottenham to a 1-1 draw in the match, which led to the replay for Tottenham. Harry Redknapp was extremely keen to win this match and progress to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, despite the fact that the prospect of finishing in the fourth place in the league was far more important.

Jermain Defoe has been unable to get into the Tottenham side in recent weeks, which has led to speculation linking him with a move back in January. However, the England striker stayed with the London club and he was rewarded with a start against Stevenage in the FA Cup.

He repaid the faith manager Harry Redknapp had in him by scoring two goals, with Adebayor getting the other goal in between the two Jermain Defoe strikes. There was a major shock on the cards when Stevenage took the lead through Byrom in the fourth minute, but Defoe equalised in the 25th minute and secured the brace in the 75th minute.

“There are not many top strikers around – if there’s a problem area in the [England] team, that’s it. He’s right up there with the best of them so he must have a great chance [of being selected],” manager Harry Redknapp said about the chances for Jermain Defoe to get into the England squad for the Euro 2012. The striker has scored 15 goals in just 29 appearances for Tottenham. Even more interesting is the fact that he has made 15 goals from just the 17 starts he has made, but the arrival of Adebayor has reduced his chances.
