DEFOE NEARLY MOVED IN JANUARY

Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe has revealed that he came extremely close to leaving Tottenham in the January transfer window.

The England striker has grown frustrated about the lack of opportunities at Tottenham due to the fact that they have Emmanuel Adebayor as their main striker. Even though the former Arsenal man is currently on a loan deal from Manchester City, Harry Redknapp is prepared to play him over the Spurs player Jermain Defoe.

Due to the fact that the Euro 2012 is just around the corner, Jermain Defoe revealed that he wanted to leave the club in the January transfer window in order to get regular first-team football.

It has been a very frustrating season for Defoe because he has managed only 11 Premier league starts all season long, while 13 appearances have come on as a substitute. The arrival of Everton striker Louis Saha in the January transfer window only served to undermine his importance to the club. Defoe is in his second spell at Tottenham, and has revealed that he is very likely to leave the club at the end of the season. The former West Ham striker is unlikely to travel to Poland and Ukraine to take part in the Euro 2012.

‘I didnt want to leave. I dont go thinking, I want to go to this club or that club. But in January I just wasnt playing enough and I did go to the manager and ask to go out on loan. He said to me, I dont want you to go out on loan. We are trying to do something special here. Dont go. And so I stayed. And I worked hard to keep myself sharp. But still I havent had that run of games. It still feels like I will only get a game if someone is injured or suspended,” said Defoe.
